Why listening to your costumers is important? - Pita Chef experience

Updated: Nov 5, 2024

Your costumers know better, they are the one to trust when you consider changing the menu.

The idea of Pita Chef was, in the first place, to start a small and humble stand in a local market, "Albert Cuyp". In that stand, we were planning to present our cuisine and culture, and to offer our authentic Syrian food, exactly as it is presented in Syria.

To start, we made Manakish. Manakish is an Arabic word that refers to a layer of dough topped or filled with regional ingredients like Zaatar, Muhammara, cheese, etc. It's something like the Arabic version of pizza, you could say. So we started with the most common products that we thought we could introduce to our new community.

Our product in general was good at the beginning and the early customers liked it, but my brother and I always had the feeling that there was something missing to make this product perfect.

Later on, we received a comment from a regular customer. She said, "Why don't you add vegetables to it? People nowadays are looking for healthier options and wit this addition you can introduce your product as delicious and healthy" I took a moment, then I looked at my brother and saw him looking at me with the same expression. We immediately understood that a decoration of colored vegetables would make our product suitable for a daily meal, and this would make customers come back more often.

This was one of the early steps to change our concept to make it fitter with its new community. We also changed the name, which was back then "Bee Snack". For this, I will tell you its story in another blog.

In summary, I have two things to say; in business there is a saying that the costumer is always right, but what I have learned in building Pita Chef is that the costumer might be right or wrong, but definitely the costumer knows what makes your product more attractive and more acceptable. The second thing I have learned is that sometimes a small addition can make a big difference, and this is what happened with the comment of our customer.
